SPEAKER WETANG’ULA URGES NATIONAL ASSEMBLY STAFF TO EMBRACE FITNESS AS A MEANS TO PROMOTE THEIR WELLNESS

The Speaker of the National Assembly the Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetang’ula has called on the staff of the National Assembly to embrace fitness as a way of life, and for enhanced productivity. He was addressing the staff when he opened the Annual National Assembly Sports’ Day event held at Kasarani National Stadium.

 While noting that the staff complement comprises of a good number of middle aged officers, Speaker Wetang’ula emphasized on the need to take time off through such initiatives to interact and create the necessary synergies for improved productivity at work.

 “The fitness of your body determines the alertness of your mind. Let us endeavour to stay healthy," the Speaker noted.

Recounting his younger days when he was a football player, the Speaker who is an avid supporter of the Arsenal Team in the European Premier League, noted that his commitment to fitness at a younger age had paid off.

 Laying emphasis on the need for the three Services of Parliament to deploy a corporate approach towards service delivery, the Speaker who doubles up as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Service Commission informed the staff that he has plans to host another sports day for all Parliamentary staff before the end of the year.

 The Parliamentary Service Commission comprises of the National Assembly Service, the Senate Service and the Parliamentary Joint Services.

The Speaker who just celebrated one year since he assumed his role at the helm of Parliament thanked the staff for the support they have extended to him over the 30 years he had served as a legislator before becoming Speaker.

 Speaking earlier at the same function, the Clerk of the National Assembly Mr. Samuel
Njoroge thanked the Speaker for finding time to attend the Sports event, which he noted was a mark of the great commitment and value he has attached to the staff who work for Parliament. 

 He further extended his gratitude to the staff for their dependability in rolling out the Parliamentary agenda. 

“I want to sincerely thank you for the incredible effort you extend towards the honourable Members. Most of you work for long hours, but I wish to let you know that your commitment does not go unappreciated. 

 Participants at the games where teams were structured into ‘Team Hoja and Team Mswada were drawn from the Directorates of the Speaker’s Office, Legislative and Procedural Services, Legal Services, Parliamentary Budget Office, Serjeant at Arms, Engineering and Maintenance and Committees Services. Staff from the Directorate of Finance and Accounts also participated.
