Speaker Lusaka Assures Women Senators of Support

The Speaker of the Senate, Sen Kenneth Lusaka, today opened a one-day workshop for Women Senators at Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club, Nairobi.

The Workshop aims to among other things: equip senators with basic knowledge of Kenya Women Senators' Association (KEWOSA), deliberate on milestones and challenges faced by women senators, developing effective strategies for promoting gender equality and media relationship with women senators.

The Speaker said the election and nomination of a total of 21 Women Senators will enhance the quest to promote gender equality in the country.

“I want to challenge women legislators to champion the removal of legal, structural, systemic, cultural, stereotypical obstacles that deny women equity and the actualization of equal opportunities in our country,” said Speaker Lusaka.

The Speaker assured the Women Senators that he would facilitate increased access to resources, training and equal debate time in the House.

The Cabinet Secretary, Public Works, Youth and Gender Affairs – Sicily Kariuki and Chairperson, National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) – Winfred Lichuma, were among the invited guests.

Also present was the Clerk of the Senate, Jeremiah Nyegenye.
