In a consultative meeting held today at the Bunge Tower, the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, chaired by Senator James Murango of Kirinyaga County, engaged with the Embassy of Japan to discuss Japanese government initiatives in Kenya's agriculture, livestock, and blue economy sectors.

Clerk of the Senate and Secretary to the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), Mr. Jeremiah Nyegenye has challenged staff to be proactive in handling occupational hazards and risks to help minimize accidents, injuries, and other health related issues.

Mr. Nyegenye who was speaking during a special talk organized by the PSC Occupational Health and Safety Services (OSH) Committee said the a proactive approach would help staff think through, to imagine and to prepare appropriately to prevent such hazards from occuring.

Today, the Senate Justice Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee (JLAHRC) led by Bomet Senator Wakili Hillary Sigei convened with key stakeholders including the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC), Inter-Religious Council (IRC), and the Electoral Law and Governance Institute of Africa (ELGIE) to deliberate on submissions concerning the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2024 (National Assembly Bills No. 10 of 2024).

Today, the Senate Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights, led by interim chair Raphael Chimera, was set to engage with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ). The meeting aimed to address the petition filed by Ms Christine Njoki Mweru concerning the unresolved abduction of her husband, Joshua Gichuki Mwangi. However, the session was hindered as both institutions sent secretariat representatives instead of their commissioners, who are crucial for discussing policy and governance issues.

 

 

𝐃𝐄𝐕𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐄 𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐅𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐍 𝐒𝐎𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐇𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐔𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐀𝐋.

The Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations chaired by Wajir Senator Mohammed Abbas has raised concerns on the proposal regarding the construction of social halls, specifically questioning whether the funding responsibility should fall on the National government or the County government.

 

The proposal is contained in the County Oversight and Accountability Bill, 2024 which is co-sponsored by Senator Ledama Ole Kina and Senator William Kisang.

Appearing before the Senate to respond to questions by the Senators, Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Pro. Kithure Kindiki said the government will mercilessly deal with drug traffickers, terrorists and people facilitation and carrying out organized criminal activities.
