Today, the Senate Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights, chaired by Senator Wakili Hillary Sigei, questioned commissioners from the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) in response to a statement by Senator Hamida Kibwana. This statement raised concerns about gender-based violence in the Kenyan political arena.

The Senate Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights, led by Senator Wakili Hillary Sigei of Bomet, has begun deliberations on a major Conflict of Interest Bill (2023). The bill, introduced by National Assembly Majority Leader Hon. Kimani Ichung'wah, was passed by the National Assembly and sent to the Senate for further consideration.

The Government takes into consideration a mix of skills and competencies when making appointments for individuals to serve in the Boards of Sugar factories, a Cabinet Secretary has told Senate.

Mr Mithika Linturi, the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, told the lawmakers that the recruitment of managing directors is guided by the approved human resource instruments of the respective sugar factories.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja appeared before Senate Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation and Housing to respond to an inquiry into the urban regeneration and renewal programme of old estates in Nairobi County. 

 

Governor Sakaja honored the summons after severally failing to appear before the committee to respond to issues in relations to urban regeneration and renewal programme of old estates.

The Senate County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee, chaired by Senator Godfrey Osotsi (Vihiga), this morning scrutinized the financial management of various county funds from the coastal region. The Committee met with governors Abdullswamad Nassir (Mombasa) and Gideon Mung'aro (Kilifi) to discuss Auditor-General reports concerning funds under their counties' jurisdiction.

The Speaker of the Senate Rt Hon Amason Jeffah Kingi, today took part in a groundbreaking forum to discuss the proliferation of illicit brews, drugs and substance abuse in the Coast region.

Illicit brews, drugs and substance abuse present significant challenges in the country, occasioning loss of lives through consumption of drinks laced with chemicals and addiction that renders many incapable of engaging in productive work and exposes them to reckless lifestyles.
