The Senate has passed a Motion that will help initiate a national conversation and foster an amiable environment following protests witnessed across the country over the last five weeks.

In the resolutions, the Senate called for the National Police Service (NPS) to acknowledge and apologize for all deaths resulting from peaceful demonstrations. The Senate also demanded compensation for all victims of police brutality related to peaceful protests between 2023 and 2024 by the Government of the Republic of Kenya.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Moses Wetang'ula has outlined a comprehensive plan to address the anticipated financial deficit resulting from the rejection of the Finance Bill, 2024. 

In a Communication to the House, the Speaker highlighted the need to amend the Division of Revenue Act, 2024, to reflect the revised revenue projections and ensure equitable distribution of funds between the national and county governments.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. (Dr.) Hon. Moses Wetang’ula on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 delivered a message from the President on President of the nomination of 10 persons for appointment as Cabinet Secretaries.

Hon. Wetang’ula said, the President, in exercising powers conferred on him by Articles 152(2) of the Constitution, as read together with sections 3 and 5 of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act, 2011, had forwarded the first list of appointees for consideration by Parliament.

The Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) has proposed a Kshs.2 billion gross reduction of its budget allocation.

The Departmental Committee on Education chaired by Hon. Julius Melly (Tinderet) on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 met with the Chief  Executive Officer (CEO), Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Mrs. Nancy Macharia to consider the 2024/25 Supplementary Estimates 1.

During the meeting Members raised concerns about the proposed Kshs.10.3 billion reduction in the budget for the TSC in the 2024/25 budget.

The Committee on Blue Economy, Water and Irrigation led by the Chairperson, Hon. Kangogo Bowen (Marakwet East), met with officials from the State Department for Blue Economy and Fisheries, State Department of Irrigation and State Department of Water and Sanitation,  over the Supplementary Estimates 1 for the Financial Year 2024/25.

The Budget and Appropriations Committee led by the Chairperson, Hon. Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu), finalized consideration of the Supplementary Estimates 1 for the Financial Year 2024/25, ahead of its tabling in the House this week.

The Public Investment Committee on Education and Governance held a meeting with several heads of learning institutions who appeared before it to respond to audit queries as raised by the Auditor-General.

The Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure chaired by Hon. George Kariuki (Ndia) has raised concerns over the effect of budget cuts on service delivery at the Ministry of Roads and Transport.

The Public Investment Committee on Governance and Education has questioned Vice-Chancellors of private universities over misuse of public funds meant for Government -Sponsored Students (GSS) placed in private universities.

The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education has asked the National Treasury to reinstate the budget allocation for the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for hiring of teachers, implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and the medical cover for teachers. 

The Senate Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations, chaired by Senator Mohamed Abass, held an engagement today with the Council of Governors (COG), Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC), County Assemblies Forum (CAF) and the State Department for Devolution. The focus was on the Intergovernmental Relations (Amendment) Bill 2024 (Senate Bill No. 12 of 2024).
