Regional CPA Africa Heads Meet over Constitutional Reforms

The sub-regional representatives of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Africa Region, are currently meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in an Executive Committee meeting held in a bid to capture the intent of the resolutions of the 49th CPA Africa Annual General Meeting, held in Gaborone, Botswana in August 2018. Key among their focus areas is the review of Article 46 of the CPA Africa Region, Constitution which provides for equity and balance in the distribution of the Offices of the Association among the sub-regions.

Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi in Parliament

Mozambique  President Filipe Nyusi today laid a wreath at the Mausoleum of the founding President the late mzee Jomo Kenyatta at the precincts of Parliament. He was received by  House leaders led by Speakers Justin Muturi (National Assembly) and Kenneth Lusaka (Senate). Also present was Majority Leader Aden Duale, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko among others.

National Assembly resumes from one week recess

The National Assembly which has been on a one week recess resumed sittings this week on Tuesday November 6, 2018. The House according to the Calender is scheduled undertake legislative business until December 6th, 2018 when it is expected members will break for the long recess that will take the House upto February 11, 2019.

Lusaka to World Parliamentarians: Link Parliaments with Tech Community to Improve Citizens’ Welfare

Geneva, Switzerland | 16th October – The Speaker of the Senate, Rt Hon Kenneth Lusaka, Tuesday addressed the 139th General Assembly of the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU) where he urged parliamentarians to use their institutions to improve the welfare of citizens by being the link with the tech and innovation community.

Speaker Muturi Meets the new SRC Commissioners

The Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Justin Muturi this morning held talks with the new Commissioners at the Salaries and Remuneration Commission. The Commissioners led by the Chairperson Ms. Lyn Cherop Mengich and the Vice Chairperson, Hon. Dalmas Otieno, had called on the Speaker in Parliament, in his capacity as the Chairperson, Parliamentary Service Commission.

Bureau of Speakers of EAC endorse Kenya’s Bid to Host EAPI

_JUBA, South Sudan | 21st September_ – The Bureau of Speakers of the East African Community has today endorsed Kenya’s bid to host the East African Parliamentary Institute (EAPI).

While advancing Kenya’s proposal to host EAPI, at the 12th Meeting of the Bureau, Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Justin Muturi and Speaker of the Senate, Rt. Hon Kenneth Lusaka noted that Kenya is best placed to host the institute.

Public Participation: Crucial Cog in Legislation and Advancing Democracy

NAKURU | 19th September, 2018 - The Speaker of the Senate, Rt Hon Kenneth Lusaka has said that public participation is a critical pillar of the Kenyan Constitution.

Speaking at Kabarak University's School of Law in Nakuru County, Lusaka noted that a framework for public participation must be realized.

"The Senate is currently processing the Public Participation Bill sponsored by Sen Amos Wako to ensure expectations of the framers of the Constitution and indeed Kenyans as a whole is realized," said Lusaka.

Hon. Samuel Chepkonga Sworn in as Member of the Parliamentary Service Commission.

Immediate former Ainabkoi MP Hon. Samuel Chepkonga, was this morning sworn in as a member of the Parliamentary Service Commission at a ceremony witnessed by Speaker of the National Assembly, who is also the PSC Chairman, Hon. Justin Muturi.

Hon. Chepkonga was picked after interviews conducted by the commission to fill a position that requires representation of a non- Member of Parliament as per the Constitution. He joins Dr. Lorna Mumelo who represents the other gender as a non Member of Parliament Commissioner, as well.

Senate Sitting in Uasin Gishu County Assembly September 24th-28th, 2018

Pursuant to article 126 of the Constitution of Kenya that mandates either House of parliament to sit anywhere in the country, The Senate of Kenya led by Rt Hon Speaker Kenneth Lusaka EGH, MP will hold a historic sitting in Uasin Gishu County Assembly from September 24th to 28th 2018. During the same period several standing committees of the House will also hold sittings at the County Assembly in the same manner and practice as it happens at the main buildings of parliament in Nairobi.

The Finance Bill, 2018 Referred back to the National Assembly by H.E. the President

On August 30, 2018, the National Assembly passed the Finance Bill, 2018.  Thereafter, the Bill was presented for Assent to H.E. the President in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the National Assembly Standing Orders. However, H. E. the President, by way of a Memorandum, has since referred the Bill back to the National Assembly for reconsideration, pursuant to the provisions of Article 115(1)(b) of the Constitution.
