Today, the Senate Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights, led by interim chair Raphael Chimera, was set to engage with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ). The meeting aimed to address the petition filed by Ms Christine Njoki Mweru concerning the unresolved abduction of her husband, Joshua Gichuki Mwangi. However, the session was hindered as both institutions sent secretariat representatives instead of their commissioners, who are crucial for discussing policy and governance issues.

Ms Mweru submitted her petition to the Senate on 4 December 2023, calling for immediate action on the stalled investigations and lack of prosecutions following her husband’s disappearance on 3 February 2020. Despite persistent efforts and communications with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the case remains unresolved.

In her petition, she urged the Senate to acknowledge the urgency of her case and expedite a hearing, summon investigative and prosecutorial bodies to account for their inaction, issue directives to assist her family in achieving closure, and hold accountable the officers who have obstructed her attempts to seek justice.

On 24 April 2024, Ms Mweru appeared before the committee, detailing the distressing circumstances of her husband’s disappearance, including the discovery of his abandoned vehicle and the identification of a suspect. Despite her relentless pursuit of justice through various governmental channels, no significant progress has been made. She emphasized that there are no pending legal proceedings related to the case in court.
