The Senate Committee on Cohesion, Equal Opportunity, and Regional Integration has urged counties to adhere to the constitutional threshold when hiring staff.

 

The committee, led by Marsabit Senator Mohamed Said Chute, emphasized that counties must prioritize Kenya's diversity when structuring their staff.

 

Senator Chute spoke when the Committee visited Lamu County Governor Hon. Issa Timamy in his office to inquire whether the county had upheld equity in its workforce.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetang’ula, has welcomed the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq, Dr. Akram Jameel Slaiman, for a courtesy visit in his office at Parliament Buildings.

The meeting showcased the commitment of both nations to enhance their parliamentary relations and explore avenues for mutual benefit.

The Division of Revenue Bill, 2024 and the Supplementary Appropriations Bill, 2024 have been assented to into law.

In a ceremony at State House, Nairobi on Monday, June 10, 2024 President Dr. William Ruto appended his signature to the two Bills.

The Senate Committees on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations and the Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs, and Human Rights, co-chaired by Senators Mohamed Abass and Raphael Chimera, convened today to deliberate on a petition submitted by Mr. Laban Omusundi. The petition addresses the issue of county governments hiring external law firms to represent them in court cases, despite having County Government Attorneys mandated to perform this role.

The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning is keen to make Kenya a manufacturing country rather than a trading one, the Chairperson has said. 

 Hon. Kimani Kuria (Molo) made the assurance during engagements with various stakeholders who appeared before the Committee to make submissions on the Finance Bill, 2024.

The Senate Deputy Speaker and Chairperson, Senate Liaison Committee, Senator Kathuri Murungi has urged Governors to prudently utilise funds recently allocated to counties.

 

The Deputy Speaker said the Senate played a crucial role in ensuring that counties received Kshs 400.1 billion up from Kshs 385 billion for the 2024/25 financial year, which he noted, was the highest amount of shareable revenue since the advent of devolution.

The Departmental Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives has resolved to engage the Ministry of Trade, Investments and Industry and other key stakeholders in the edible oils sub-sector in an effort to address the escalating prices of cooking oil.

This decision was arrived at by the Committee during a meeting with a group of edible oil manufacturers in the country. The said meeting was chaired by Vice-Chairperson, Hon. Marianne Kitany (Aldai).
