The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs Committee chaired by Hon.George Murugara (Tharaka) is set to consider two legislative proposals.
The Political Parties (Amendment) Bill (2022) and The County Governments (Amendment) Bill, 2023. The Bills are sponsored by Hon. Wanami Wamboka (Bumula) and Hon. David Ochieng (Ugenya) respectively.
Hon. Wamboka is proposing amendments to the Political Parties Act by providing for the establishment of the offices of the Leader of Official Opposition and the Deputy Leader of Opposition.
According to Hon. Wamboka, the two offices will accommodate candidates from the political party that receives the second greatest number of votes in a Presidential Election.
βThe person should therefore be accommodated in the political process to promote active participation by individual citizens in political life including organizing civic education in democracy and other electoral processes; and influencing the shaping of public opinion on matters of good governance, democracy and electoral processes,β part of the Bill reads.
