The National Assembly on its afternoon sitting on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 joined the Kenyatta University fraternity and the country in mourning the death of 11 students in a road crash on Monday, March 18, 2024.

Β Hon. Augustine Mwafrika (Roysambu) led Members in condoling with the bereaved.Β

"I wish to convey my condolences to the affected families, Roysambu residents, Kenyatta University and the country. The University students who lost their lives were on an educational trip to Mombasa when their bus collided with a trailer along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway near Maungu. 42 injured students are admitted at Moi Referral Hospital in Voi and seven others have been airlifted to Avenue hospital in Nairobi," he said.

Β Members raised concern and renewed calls for stricter regulations on road safety with Hon. Rahim Dawood (North Imenti) highlighted the need for proper maintenance and responsible driving of public service vehicles, particularly those transporting students.

Β Β "The buses in Kenya are made with chassis from lorries. NTSA needs to relook at the framework for the maintenance and roadworthiness of PSVs. We also need to be more vigilant on how our public service vehicles are driven," Hon. Dawood said.Β

Hon. Dorothy Muthoni (Nominated) appealed to the relevant Ministry to cover the medical bills of the injured students to alleviate the financial burden on their families.

Β Members raised concerns regarding the inaction by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure on the quality of public service vehicles and the increased careless driving and lack of adherence to traffic rules and international vehicle standards.

Β Hon. Rindikiri Mugambi (Buuri) said the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure should have taken measures in dealing with fatal accidents.

Β β€œThese accidents are happening due to negligence, poor road design and the construction of our vehicles. We previously had road control checkpoints and roadblocks. The buses in this country do not meet the international standards," Hon. Mugambi said.
