The Regional Integration Committee on Thursday, March 21, 2024 held a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration led byΒ  Β Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Hon. (Prof.) Kithure Kindiki.

The CS and his team appeared before the Committee chaired by Hon. Wanjiku Muhia (Kipipiri) to respond to concerns over elimination of roadblocks along the Northern Corridor and status of passport issuance to members of the public.

In an earlier appearance before the Committee, Hon. (Prof.) Kindiki committed to eliminate all roadblocks across the country, in particular along the Northern Corridor.

The CS told Members that the Ministry is 60 percent compliant as some roadblocks have to be maintained to ensure security along the Northern Corridor.

Regarding passport issuance, Hon. (Prof.) Kindiki e said the Ministry has not met the set standards citing increase in demand for passports as the reason. He, however, assured Members that plans are underway to address the backlog and streamline the process.

Hon. Muhia asked the CS to ensure that passport issuance is fast-tracked and members of the public are not subjected to long hours of queuing in order to obtain the document.

β€œThis Committee will not tolerate seeing members of the public queuing for long hours at Nyayo House in search of passports,” she said.Β
