In a bid to boost Kenya's coconut and cashew nut industry, the National Assembly Committee on Agriculture and Livestock, chaired by Hon. Dr. John Mutunga, is poised to scrutinize a legislative proposal.
The proposed Coconut and Cashew Nut Bill, 2023 sponsored by Deputy Majority Leader of the Majority Party and Kilifi North MP, Hon. Owen Yaa Baya, seeks to provide regulation for the production, processing, marketing, grading, storage, collection, transportation and warehousing of coconut and cashew nut.
The proposed Bill also seeks to establish the Coconut and Cashew Nut Board of Kenya, a body with the pivotal role of overseeing the regulation, production, grading, storage, auctioning, marketing, research, and development of coconut and cashew nut.
The National Assembly Committee on Agriculture and Livestock is expected to engage with stakeholders including State Department for Crop Development, the Office of the Attorney General, the Kenya Law Reform Commission, and the sponsor of the legislative proposal, Hon. Owen Yaa Baya, MP in the coming days and submit its findings to the Speaker within thirty days, inline with Standing Order 114.
