Selection Panel for IEBC Commissioners takes Oath of Office; holds inaugural meeting

Members of the Selection Panel for the Appointment of Commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission have today elected Dr. Elizabeth Muli and Mr. Awori James Achoka as Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, respectively; setting in motion to process to fill the four vacancies in the membership of the poll Commission.

The Panel’s inaugural meeting was preceded by Oath taking at the Supreme Court in a ceremony presided by Acting Chief Justice, The Hon Philomena Mbete Mwilu; as provided by Paragraph 2 of the First Schedule to the Election Laws (Amendment) and the Third Schedule to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act, 2011.

According to the Panel’s Workplan, advertisements inviting applications for the positions of Members of the Commission shall be published in two newspapers of national circulation and the website of the Parliamentary Service Commission on 1st May, 2021. It shall close receipt for a period of 14 days and thereafter conduct longlisting and shortlisting.

“The Panel expects to select and forward the names of qualified candidates for the positions of members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to the President on or about 9th June, 2021,” Dr Muli said.

“The Selection Panel recognizes and appreciates the trust bestowed on it and wishes to assure the people of Kenya that it will perform its functions with strict adherence to the Constitution and the law and shall remain faithful to the Oath of Office that it took today.”
