Speakers of Parliament Attend Swearing in of Justice Ouko as Appellate Court President

NAIROBI, 26th June, 2018 – The Speaker of the Senate, Rt Hon Kenneth Lusaka and his counterpart in the National Assembly, Hon Justin Muturi, today attended the Swearing in and Assumption of Office of Hon Justice William Ouko, as President of the Court of Appeal.

While congratulating Hon Ouko on his election and assumption of office, Speaker Lusaka noted that Kenyans took a decisive step – close to ten years ago – when they overwhelmingly voted for the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 which bequeathed the Judiciary much needed independence.

The National Assembly Proceeds on a Short Recess

The National Assembly proceeded on a short recess at the rise of the House on Thursday, 5th July, 2018, pursuant to the provisions of Standing Order 28(3) relating to Calendar of the Assembly. The regular sittings will resume on Tuesday, 24th July, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. The two (2) weeks recess falls within the Second Part of the Second Session of the Twelfth Parliament.

The Office of the Senior Deputy Clerk

The Senior Deputy Clerk is the second senior-most officer in the National Assembly and the immediate deputy to the Clerk of the National Assembly. The Senior Deputy Clerk deputizes the Clerk in the management of the affairs of the National Assembly.

The Office of the Deputy Speaker

The office of the Deputy Speaker is established in Article 106 of the Constitution and provided for in the Standing Orders. The Deputy Speaker is elected by Members from amongst themselves and performs the duties of the Deputy Speaker. The Deputy Speaker is the Chairperson of the Committee of the Whole House and also chairs the Liaison Committee. He or she is the Chairperson of the Members of the Chairperson’s Panel, which comprises four members who assist the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker in presiding in the plenary.
