The Speaker of the Senate, Rt Hon Amason Jeffah Kingi, today, addressed the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), a global organisation of national parliaments, of which the Parliament of Kenya is a member and whose primary role is to promote democratic governance, accountability and cooperation among its members.

Β

The Speaker shared Kenya’s experience over the years in harnessing the critical role of Parliament in providing checks on the Executive; protecting democracy and political pluralism; providing a platform for political alternatives; and legislating and ratifying peace agreements.

Β

He also challenged the IPU fraternity to leverage Parliament’s enormous influence as the body with the mandate of legislation, oversight, representation and budgeting in our nations to deploy Parliamentary Diplomacy in conflict prevention and resolution in the world’s troubled spots and to ensure a fair, just and prosperous society.Β

Β

The Assembly is taking place at the IPU headquarters in Geneva Switzerland and is also attended by the Clerk of the Senate, Mr Jeremiah Nyegenye, Deputy Clerk Mohamed Ali and other parliamentary officers.
