The National Assembly resumed its sittings today for the second part of the Fourth Session, which the Speaker, the Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetangโula, described as the โBudget Sessionโ owing to the critical financial business ahead.ย
Members of Parliament returned from a working recess that saw them conduct public hearings on the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and scrutinise the 2025/2026 Budget Estimates.
In his Communication,ย Speaker Wetangโula outlined the Houseโs legislative agenda. โThe House will prioritise consideration of the Report of the Budget and Appropriations Committee on the Estimates for FY 2025/2026. This will pave way for the Committee of Supply, and the attendant legislation, including the Appropriation Bill, 2025 and the Finance Bill, 2025,โ the Speaker stated.
Speaker Wetang'ula further noted that the Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Economic Planning is scheduled to deliver the 2025/2026 Budget Statement on Wednesday, 12th June 2025, in line with the East African Community protocol to synchronise the budget announcements across member states.
โI urge each one of you to rise to the occasion so that together, we deliver on the legislative mandate of this House, in line with the Constitution,โ he told Members.
Members paid tribute to their late colleague, Hon. Charles Ongโondo Were, the Member for Kasipul Constituency, who was tragically shot and killed on 30th April 2025.
โThe National Assembly, Kasipul Constituency, and indeed the nation lost a dependable and astute legislator who served his constituents and the nation with utmost dedication,โ the Speaker eulogised.
โOn my own behalf, and that of the House and the Parliamentary Service Commission, I extend our sincere gratitude to all Members of Parliament and the parliamentary fraternity for supporting the family of the late Hon. Were in their moment of grief,โ he added.
He urged the countryโs security agencies to pursue justice. โMay I also urge the security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of the heinous killing of the late Hon. Ongโondo Were are brought to book and his family receives justice for the loss of their loved one.โ
