Members of the Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works accompanied the President to witness the commissioning of the Boma Yangu Homa Bay Affordable Housing project developed by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) and the Modern Fish Market by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development.
The event presided over by His Excellency the President Dr. William Ruto in the company of the former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga and Members of Parliament marked completion of 110 houses on Friday 30th May, 2025.
The units include 38 two-bedroom houses, 40 one-bedroom units, 30 Studio apartments, and two studio houses with shops. They are set to benefit residents from diverse backgrounds, including boda boda riders and market traders in line with the government's commitment to provide dignified housing for all Kenyans,
The Committee Chairperson, Hon. Johanna Ng'eno commended the National Housing Corporation (NHC) for aligning with the affordable housing agenda goals, calling for expanded capacity.
"NHC has the capacity to deliver even more. You can work as a contractor and compete effectively for large-scale projects," Hon. Ng'eno said.
He also pledged for the Committee's support in addressing the challenges faced by the Corporation, including initiating legislative reforms to strengthen its mandate.
The other Members of the Committee lauded the quality of the work done by NHC but raised some recommendations to enhance project execution.
They urged the Corporation to develop a clear operational framework, adhere to timelines, quality standards and budget allocations for all houses across the country.
They also stressed the need for NHC to prioritize project completion, get returns on investments and embrace innovations, focusing less on challenges but rather long-lasting solutions.
While handing over the houses and the Homabay Fish Market to Homabay residents, President Ruto applauded NHC efforts and gave the green light for the launch of phase 2 which will comprise of 1,000 affordable housing units, a school and a hospital within the estate.
"NHC has proven its capability. Now we expect them to deliver phase 2 along with a school and a hospital for this community," said the President.
NHC CEO, QS. David Mathu in his address appealed to lawmakers for their continued support and legal frameworks to enable the Corporation to deliver its mandate and compete favourably as a public contractor.
