National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetang'ula called on the staff to uphold professionalism, integrity, and discipline as fundamental values in their service.

Speaking during the National Assembly inaugural Staff Open Day, Speaker Wetang’ula encouraged a mindset of continuous improvement and innovation.

β€œLet discipline be the mantra in your work. Growth is open to everyone, but only if you are ready to grow.”

The first-ever Staff Open Day, bringing together Members of Parliament, the Parliamentary Service Commission, leadership, and hundreds of parliamentary staff.

The event, themed "Excellence in Service Delivery Through Innovation, Collaboration and Commitment," focused on introspection, recognition, and connection.

In his keynote address, Speaker Wetang’ula, shared a heartfelt overview of the institution's history and underscored the staff's vital role.

β€œParliament is a better place because of you. Everyone here is a cog in the wheel of democracy, no one is too small to matter,” he asserted.

The Chairperson of the Staff Welfare Committee of the Parliamentary Service Commission, Hon. Faith Gitau, also addressed the gathering, leading a moment of silence for the late Mr. Maasai Lekipai, Deputy Director of Human Capital.

Hon. Gitau reaffirmed the Commission's dedication to addressing staff concerns.

β€œPromises made must become promises kept. We will listen, learn, and lead with kindness,” she stated.

Noting that the forum had been convened to discuss the ways and means to provide excellent service delivery through innovation, collaboration and commitment, she pledged the Commission’s support even as she called on the staff to freely share ideas on how to improve service delivery.

β€œThe Open Day is a symbol of renewed commitment to dialogue, transparency, and mutual respect. This is a safe and inclusive space. Here, sharing happens without fear or judgment”, she noted.

Earlier, while addressing the forum, the Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Samuel Njoroge the laudedthe staff, acknowledging their tireless work that often goes unnoticed.

β€œBehind every Committee report, every legislative document, and every milestone, there is a committed team working tirelessly, often away from the limelight”, he stated.

He further stressed that excellence extends beyond simply completing tasks.

β€œExcellence goes beyond ticking boxes. It’s about upholding our values, even when no one is watching,” he added.

He also urged staff to embrace innovation, moving past the "we've always done it this way" mentality.

β€œWe must adapt to the changing needs of Parliament. Innovation must be a pillar, not an afterthought,” he emphasized.

β€œThis event is christenedβ€˜Ways and Means’ because that’s what we are here to explore; how we facilitate Parliament, how we deliver service excellently, and how we stay true to our collective mission,” said Mr. Njoroge.

Notably, Mr. Njoroge informed staff that the National Treasury had commended the National Assembly for closing its accounts in the last financial year without a single audit query, a rare achievement in public service.

The Open Day featured interactive sessions and open discussions on workplace issues, alongside recognizing outstanding staff for their innovation and service delivery.
