The Senate played host to a delegation from the Makueni County Assembly Business Committee Wednesday, as they sought to benchmark the Senate's accomplishments in its tripartite role of legislation, representation and oversight.

The delegation was received by Member of the Speaker’s Panel, Sen. Abdul Haji flanked by Makueni Senator, Dan Maanzo who apprised the team of the Bills that are currently before the House and explored areas of collaboration between the Senate and the County Assembly.

Senator Haji, who was representing the Senate Speaker Rt. Hon. Amason Kingi, appreciated the County Assembly of Makueni for being one of the counties that are effectively entrenching devolution through legislation and oversight.

β€œThe 25 legislations and 12 regulations that you have legislated on is a clear testament to the success of devolution,” remarked Senator Haji.

He added that the Senate is ready and willing to capacitate the county assemblies across the country so that they can effectively discharge their mandate for the benefit of Kenyans.

As the host Senator, Sen. Maanzo took the opportunity to welcome the delegation from Makueni to the Senate and pledged his full support for his county assembly.

The Makueni Leadership led by their Speaker, Hon. Douglas Mbilu implored the Senate to entrench the Ward Development Fund in law so that Kenyans can fully benefit from the fruits of devolution.

β€œWe urge the Senate to push so that 15% of the total county budget goes to the ward so that you lock some money to go to the lowest level of governance,” Hon. Mbilu said.

He added that entrenching the Ward Development Fund in law will ensure that every part of the country benefits from development, since governors discriminate against wards that don’t support them politically.
