The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs (JLAC) has held a consultative meeting with officials from the Office of the Registrar of Polical Parties; led by the Registrar Mr. John Lorionokou.
The meeting is in furtherance of ongoing consultative efforts by the Committee to ensure adequate preparation by key stakeholders ahead of next year's General Election.
The meeting chaired by Rarieda MP Hon. (Dr.) Otiende Amollo, reviewed key areas of collaboration in the broader quest to strengthen the country's democratic processes through legislation, especially those aimed at strengthening political parties and coalitions processes.
The Committee Members in attendance and officials from ORPP acknowledged the critical role of timely legislation in enhancing credible, transparent and peaceful elections.
Hon. Omollo noted that time was running out and there was need for speedy legislative solutions to recurrent pre-and-post election party related matters that have been noted in past electoral cycles.
Among these is better legal clarity on processes of registration and dissolution of political parties, coalitions formation, party nomination lists among others.
"The journey to be walked is a long one but the time available is short. I propose that our respective technical team should speedily meet so that any legislative proposals related to the election are speedily handled for immidiate consideration before time runs out," noted Hon. Omollo.
ORPP officials welcomed the initiative, noting that closer engagement with JLAC would facilitate the sharing of technical expertise and practical insights gathered from political parties and other electoral stakeholders.
JLAC has also recently met other stakeholders including the Independent Electoral and Bounderies Commission and the Judiciary to deliberate on their state of preparedness ahead of the next General Election.
